Spring 2019
In the video above, you can watch how SRJC's Horticulture 144 class learned and applied their knowledge to install a new irrigation system at 1808 Albany Drive. Thanks to Kris Loomis for leading these students and helping to move this project forward!
We have made great progress on 1808 Albany Drive!
We have:
Removed rock, fencing, and unwanted plants
Planted most of the new plants
Installed drip irrigation
Built berms to support butterfly swales
We still need to:
Remove Privets (by hand or with machinery)
Grade and prepare area supporting rain barrels
Complete planting
437 Elliott Ave. we have:
Removed oak seedlings, fencing, and other vegetation
Installed ADA ramp
Dug out rain garden
We still need to:
Complete rain garden
Install boulders
Plant in Fall
425 Elliott Ave.:
Joel Grogan's horticulture class solarized the lawn on May 9th in order to kill off the Bermuda grass. This process involved first watering the lawn and trenching the boundary, and then sealing in the moisture with 3mm thick clear plastic film weighted down by bricks and tucked into the trenched edge. In 6-8 weeks, the plastic should have done its job, and will be removed to reveal a hopefully clean slate for additional summer preparation, and fall planting.
